Translation Memory Software — general information

First, let's start with a clarification what is CAT. It means 'computer aided translation' and works as a tool for achieving more efficient translation process of text documents. It has several basic functions: setting the text in segments, this way facilitating the translation; combining the source and the translated text in translation units; preserving the translation units in a Translation Memory bank, allowing this way for them to be used later and matching source text segments with translated ones; automatic search in terminology database. It can also have different additional functions for text search, indexing, import/export function, statistics, harmonizing, use of Internet tools for information search. All that gives a particular advantage of the use of CAT tool in the performance of specific translation projects.
Here are some of the pros of using CAT software when translating:

• Processing of great amounts of text in a short time and increasing translation productivity.

• Keeping a high level of consistency in terms of terminology (especially useful in technical, legal or financial translations) with an option of standardized glossaries which facilitates coordination between translators who work on parts of big projects.

• Allowing easy review and comparison between the source and the translated text through the segmentation function.

Translators at arte.doc are experienced with the following CAT programs: SDL Trados, SDLX, Transit, Wordfast, Idiom, Passolo, Déjà Vu, but we are opened to any suggestions from you to work with other programs.
